The gracefully arching leaves are dark green in colour with a contrasting white margin, making this sedge a great focal point. This small and hardy Carex will form a neat mound and it works really well in a bed or border alongside other evergreen varieties: we would recommend planting this alongside something brighter, like the Carex 'Everillo', as the two plants make the perfect foil with their contrasting foliage. This sedge will also live happily in a pot and its arching leaves will reach over the edge of the pot, which is a great way to add structure to your garden; you could place the pots on either side of some garden steps or by an entrance to fully utilise the year-round colour.

This is a fantastic little sedge that is low-maintenance and perfect for a mixed bed or border. Its shape and size make it a great choice for architectural planting as it adds structure to the lower areas of a garden. We love this colourful sedge alongside something with a differing colour and texture, like the Carex 'Frosted Curls', but if you want a similar shape, but with different colours, then the Carex 'Everest' works really well.

This clump-forming sedge has long and slender foliage that provides variegated colour all year round. This is a great choice for brightening up a bed or border and it works well when planted alongside a contrasting, variegated sedge like the Carex 'Eversheen'; the grassy nature of this ornamental sedge means that it flutters and moves with the breeze. You can also plant this hardy sedge in a large pot where its arching foliage will reach over the edges. We would recommend the 'Everlime' if you're wanting a healthy dose of colour, structure and movement in your garden.

The 'Jenneke' is a striking sedge which will add a healthy dose of variegated colour to any bed or border. This shrub will light up your garden all year round with its lustrous yellow leaves that have a fine green margin. The slender leaves are upright, but gently arch at the top: this sedge will add movement and texture to your garden with a light breeze. Although this is technically an evergreen, you can get the best out of the foliage by cutting away any dead leaves and the foliage will bounce back in spring looking even fresher. Spring also sees the addition of pale brown spikelets which sit nestled amongst the colourful leaves. This is a clump-forming Carex and it looks beautiful when planted alongside a darker sedge like the Carex comans 'Bronze'.
Carex oshimensis Eversheen
Japanese Sedge

The leaves are long, arching and bright yellow-green in colour, with dark green margins. This variegation adds year-round interest and the vibrancy of the leaves will brighten up any winter bed or border. The foliage forms a dense mound and looks perfect with other low, tufted perennials: we love the way the 'Eversheen' looks alongside the copper and dark green tones of the Carex Testacea, but it really will compliment so many different plants that you can place it anywhere. Its architectural form will bring shape and movement at ground level, or you can plant it in a pot as a specimen.
Carex testacea
Orange New Zealand Sedge
Common Name: Orange New Zealand Sedge Latin Name: Carex testacea Soil: Fertile moist, well-drained soil Position: Full sun or partial shade Hardiness: Hardy Eventual height/spread: 0.7m/0.6m Special features: An evergreen sedge with leaves that change colour. The 'estacea' is a real treat as it offers year-round interest, but with a bi-annual change in colour. From spring through to autumn the slender, arching leaves are olive-green in colour, but throughout winter the leaves intensify and hold a coppery-orange colour. Midsummer sees the arrival of brown flower spikelets, which sit nestled amongst the foliage. Towards the end of summer you get to enjoy the variety of the older olive-green leaves which sit alongside the newer coppery leaves. This colourful sedge forms a dense mound and it works well in a bed or border with other perennials like the brighter Carex 'Eversheen'. Or, for a real array of colours, plant this alongside another ornamental grass, like the Festuca 'Elijah Blue', as the differing colours and textures contrast beautifully. This hardy sedge also works well as a specimen when planted in a large pot and this can look particularly effective when you have two planted on either side of a door or path.
Carex Vanilla Ice
Carex Vanice
Common Name: Carex Vanice Latin Name: Carex morrowii 'Vanilla Ice' Soil: Fertile moist, well drained soil Position: Full sun or partial shade Hardiness: Hardy Eventual height/spread: 04.m/0.4m Special features: Vibrant green leaves with creamy yellow margins (Evergreen) If you want to add a healthy splash of year-round colour to a low bed or border then the 'Vanilla Ice' is a fantastic choice. The long, slender leaves are mid-green in colour with variegated creamy yellow margins. Over time the leaves will form a spreading mound, making a neat and attractive plant. We recommend this one for adding structure and movement to a border, but it also works really well in a pot as its leaves will spill over the edge. Plant this alongside another colourful evergreen, like the Carex 'Everillo', for year-round colour.

Festuca glauca Intense Blue
Intense Blue Festuca
Common Name: Intense Blue Festuca Latin Name: Festuca glauca 'Intense Blue' Soil: Fertile, moist, well-drained soil Position: Full sun Flowering period/colour: Summer/ Blue flower spikes Hardiness: Hardy Eventual height/spread: 0.3m/ 0.2m Special features: Striking silvery blue leaves. The 'Intense Blue' injects an explosion of steely blue colour into any garden and it’s the perfect choice for planting in a pot on a sunny patio. The very fine leaves are highly ornamental and they form a wispy mound. In summer blue-green flower spikes add further interest and these age to a straw-like texture. As the name suggests, the colour is intense and therefore makes a fantastic accent plant for any of the darker grasses: we love it alongside the Carex testacea as the two plants have fine leaves, but with contrasting colours.
